The Brain-Gut Connection

You are what you eat, is the old adage. And more and more evidence points to this being absolutely true.

From ABC, ‘The Second Brain’ is a fascinating interview with neurologist Dr David Perlmutter, on the clear connection between the microbiome of the gastro-intestinal tract and the treatment of brain disorders:

“…the really exciting news for me as a brain specialist is the fact that we are now uncovering powerful information in the gut that strongly relates to the health and viability of the brain. We know that the gut, for example, makes more than 90% of very important neurotransmitters, like the happy chemical serotonin…And really exciting is the understanding that the gut and specifically the bacteria that live within the gut regulate the process of inflammation in the human body. And make no mistake about it, inflammation is the cornerstone of virtually every degenerative condition throughout the body, not just the brain. Inflammation is what is thought to be operative in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, autism, coronary artery disease, diabetes, and even cancer.
